Een woord van kennis: een geschenk van God

God's Nearness in Our Daily Lives

When I think about how powerful a word of knowledge can be, I’m continually moved. It’s as if the Holy Spirit lifts the veil just slightly to reveal that God not only knows us but is actively involved in our lives. For me, it’s one of the most beautiful ways heaven touches earth.

What Is a Word of Knowledge?

The Bible speaks in various places about the gifts of the Spirit, including a word of knowledge (1 Corinthians 12:8). This is a specific revelation of something you couldn’t know through natural understanding. God shares something with you about a situation or a person, intended to build up, encourage, and demonstrate His love. It might be a practical insight, a confirmation, or a form of encouragement. The beauty is you don’t need to be a “super-Christian” to receive it. God gives this gift because He wants to work through us, no matter our background or status.

Biblical Examples

In the Gospel of John, we read how Jesus used a word of knowledge during His encounter with the Samaritan woman at the well (John 4:16-19). He tells her she’s had five husbands and is currently living with someone who’s not her husband. It touches her deeply, and she calls the whole village. Here we see that a word of knowledge isn’t meant to condemn it opens a door to faith and transformation.

In Acts 5, a word of knowledge becomes evident again. Peter confronts Ananias and Sapphira about their lie something he couldn’t possibly have known without divine revelation. This shows that sometimes God reveals things to restore truth and righteousness.

💼 A Gift in Practice

As an entrepreneur and consultant, I often visit companies and pray for people. It’s in that context that I experience God speaking through words of knowledge. These moments aren’t just meaningful for others they strengthen my own faith.

One of the most striking instances was while praying for an entrepreneur. During prayer, I strongly sensed that he urgently needed a technical specialist. It was as if God said: “This is urgent. Pray specifically for this need.” When I shared it, he was astonished and confirmed that this was exactly what he was struggling with. We prayed together for God’s provision, and I believe the prayer made a difference.

God Makes Himself Close

The wonder of a word of knowledge is how close it brings God. A simple thought or impression can open a door to a profound experience of His love. For example, I was praying for a woman when the verse from Matthew 10:30 came to mind: “Even the hairs on your head are all numbered.” I felt God wanted to say He knew her deeply and loved her. When I shared it, she was surprised and said, “That’s incredible! I’m a hairdresser—and this verse has always meant a lot to me.” For both of us, it was a moment where God drew near.

Available to Everyone

You might ask: can I experience this too? The answer is yes. A word of knowledge is a gift of the Spirit available to anyone who follows Jesus. It often starts as a quiet idea or gentle thought. By simply obeying and sharing what God places on your heart, you can encourage others and strengthen their faith. It takes courage to share an impression, especially when you’re unsure it’s correct. But I’ve learned that God works through our weakness. It’s not about perfect words but a willing heart. The more you practice, the more you’ll learn to recognize His voice.

An Invitation

I encourage you to be open to how God wants to speak through you. A word of knowledge is a gift from a Father who longs to be close and reveal Himself. I pray that you too will experience being an instrument in His hand that He’ll use you to encourage others through a prayer or a word shared at just the right moment. Whether you’re an entrepreneur, student, or parent God can work through you.

Dare to listen, dare to share and discover the beauty of being a channel of His love.
