Recognizing His voice takes practice

That God is a God who wants to speak is something we see throughout the Bible. The real question is whether we take the time and find the stillness to listen and hear what He wants to say.

In 1 Samuel 3, we read that Samuel is called by God three times, but he doesn’t recognize His voice he assumes it is Eli speaking to him.

Apparently, just like Samuel, we need to learn to recognize God’s voice through practice. That’s why below you’ll find a few practical exercises to help you do just that:

 Preparation:

  • First, write down everything that’s still on your mind: Things you need to do today, groceries, emails, messages to reply to. Maybe even worries or mental distractions that keep surfacing.

  • Also note your emotions: What are you happy, sad, angry, or disappointed about?

Listening:

  • Once your mind feels clear, ask God what He wants to say to you. Sometimes a Bible verse comes to mind, or He brings someone to your heart. Other times, you simply get to rest in His presence and sense His warmth and love.

  • You can also practice listening during worship: Praise God tell Him how much you love Him, how great and powerful He is. Declare that He is your Redeemer, Deliverer, and Healer. This can be through songs you sing yourself, worship music you listen to, or reading a psalm aloud.

  • While in this posture, write down the names of loved ones—roommates or close friends and ask God what you might share with them. Sometimes He gives a verse, a picture or image, or a word of knowledge or wisdom (something about someone that you couldn’t know yourself). Write everything down!

Wouldn’t it be beautiful to pass along your encouragement to others? You might say, “I have the impression that God wants to encourage you with…” Ask the person if they felt truly encouraged or recognized themselves in what you shared. This way, you can continue growing in hearing and recognizing God's voice.

“Teach me, Lord, to hear what You are saying!”
