Come to the Father

‘Kom tot de Vader’

For some time, I had been walking around with the thought of getting baptized, but something kept holding me back. Eventually, I found my way to Youth Alpha, where I’ve since taken part as a group leader several times. During our most recent Alpha weekend, I received a text from my sister telling me she was going to be baptized. She was attending a Roots weekend and had been deeply touched by the song “Come to the Father.” That song holds special meaning for both of us—we sang it at our father’s deathbed.*

She made the decision to be baptized and asked if I would come. Of course I wanted to be there, so I left the Alpha weekend early. On the drive there, I had Groot Nieuws Radio playing and prayed, “Lord, if this is also my moment to be baptized, would You let me hear that song?” But the whole journey passed without it being played.

I took my seat in the service, and during the welcome, they mentioned there would be space for anyone who wanted to be baptized. Still, I thought: it’s not my time. Until the band began playing the first song—“Come to the Father.” What an extraordinary moment! God was calling me, and I couldn’t stay seated any longer. “Yes, I want to!”**

Later I heard from the band that they had decided at the very last moment to begin the service with that song. How special to see God’s hand in it all!
