New oil in empty jars

“When was the last time you did something for the first time?” Every time I sit down in front of a blank canvas, I’m moved. God longs to do something new in you and me every single day.

In the Bible, we read in 2 Kings 4:1–7 about a woman who was a widow. She didn’t settle for a standard solution to provide for her family but worked together with her children. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough, and a creditor came to claim her children. She had no immediate family who could marry her or pay off her debt. So she turned to Elisha, a man of God and a leader of the prophetic community. He didn’t give her money but he gave her a solution. What a beautiful foreshadowing of what Jesus would later do for us.

Maybe the widow was hoping for a sack of money to fix her problems. But Elisha just like Jesus offered something far less expected.

  • She was invited to endlessly fill her jars with oil.

  • She was allowed to pour out what she had received from God.

  • A debt was cancelled.

  • Faith was increased.

  • And there was abundance to live from.

What new thing have you received from God that you can now pour out for others?
