Matthé: In 2019, my wife Gerda and I walked the Pieterpad a long-distance trail of 498 kilometers over twenty-six days. Before we set off, we had booked ten overnight stays, and arranged the rest as we traveled. Our theme was “Today is today, tomorrow comes later.” I found it nerve-wracking. Would we be able to find places to stay and reach our destination together without any injuries?
So it was especially meaningful when, on the wall of one B&B, we found these very words: "Yesterday is gone, tomorrow is yet to come. This is the day the Lord has made. Live today!" That this particular painting was hanging in our room gave me strength.
During the walk, my eyes fell on a torn-up Bible. I was shocked “Why would someone rip a Bible to pieces?” But the painful moment turned into something beautiful. I picked up one page from the ground and read Psalm 32:8, a verse that’s been a thread running through my life: “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go. I will counsel you; My eye is on you.” Those powerful words were etched on the wall of a room in my heart never to be forgotten. God’s eye is upon us, even now! I kept the page and now it rests under a glass dome in my home office.
We thoroughly enjoyed the adventure and are deeply thankful that we reached our shared destination.
