Let’s Have a Conversation

Let’s explore frequently asked questions about hearing God’s voice, with insights from Dyonne and Wim. They don’t claim to have all the answers, but together they have more than twenty years of experience following Jesus.

Question: How do I know if an impression comes from God?

Dyonne: “Sometimes I do find it hard to discern. What helps me is spending time with Jesus (His words). It also helped me to label negative thoughts as coming from the enemy and loving words as coming from God.”

Wim: “What helps me is this framework: if it aligns with the life and truth of Jesus, then I see it as a green light. If it doesn’t, I’m not likely to accept it as an impression from God.”

Additional Thought: God’s voice rarely sounds like a booming external voice, as portrayed in some movies. More often, it’s a whisper in your heart. Peace and joy can also provide direction. Try stepping out in faith when you sense God is speaking and learn from the experience, even if it turns out not to be from Him (or turns out it was). If certain impressions have significant consequences, seek out mature believers to help discern whether the message truly comes from God.

Question: Does God answer my prayers?

Dyonne: “Absolutely! I cried out for help when I was 14 years old during a terrible season when I felt very unhappy. God responded by intervening in my life. I’ve experienced this many times He always answers, but I need to pay close attention, because He answers in His time and in His way. You also have to be open to answers you might not want to hear. But He truly wants the best for you!”

Wim: “I completely agree. Sometimes we’re not listening and may feel like we’re stuck in a dry season or walking around the same mountain for the hundredth time. But I believe God wants to respond to every one of our questions. He desires to communicate with us!”

Additional Thought: Sometimes it may feel silent while you're waiting for an answer. It could be that God has already spoken but you didn’t recognize His voice. Maybe you expected Him to speak through a Bible verse, but He instead spoke through a deep sense of peace in your heart. Hearing God is a lifelong learning process and we’re all growing in it.
