“How can I hear God’s voice in the midst of life’s busyness?”
Busyness can come in many forms both internal and external. It might stem from situations beyond your control, pulling you along with the tide of circumstance. Or it might be the mental noise of endless to-dos, high expectations from yourself or others, and a strong sense of responsibility.
As Corrie ten Boom once said: “If the devil cannot make you sin, he’ll make you busy.”
But what does the devil have to do with this? Perhaps this: Restlessness is the opposite of the peace Jesus promises us:
“Come to Me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28–30)
This doesn’t mean we’ll never be busy but Jesus wants to guide and support us in our daily lives. We are invited to learn how to remain in His rest.
In Isaiah 30:21 we read:
“Your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it,’ whether you turn to the right or to the left.”
It’s vital to keep turning our ears and hearts toward Him in all things, and to guard our inner peace, which we so deeply need:
“There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their own work, just as God did from His.” (Hebrews 4:9–10)
“Can I hear God’s voice if I’ve sinned?”
This is best answered with a counter-question: “What makes you aware that you’ve sinned?”
The answer is found in John 16:8:
“When He (the Holy Spirit) comes, He will convict the world regarding sin…”
If you feel a stirring in your conscience about something sinful that’s a sign that the Holy Spirit is already speaking to you!
And thankfully, it doesn’t stop there. It’s actually an invitation to speak to God:
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9)
God speaks to make us aware of our sin but even more to lead us into healing and restoration.
